Adamawa Governor Fintiri Defects to APC, Cites Need for State to Join "Mainstream Politics"

Yola, Adamawa State - February 27, 2026

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of North-East Nigeria, Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri CON, GSSRS, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statewide broadcast to the citizens of Adamawa on Friday, February 27, 2026, Governor Fintiri framed the decision not as a personal political realignment, but as a strategic necessity to secure the long-term development and prosperity of the state. He assured residents that the move was taken "in the best interest of Adamawa state and our people."

Governor Fintiri, who secured two decisive electoral victories in 2019 and 2023 under the PDP banner, began his address by reaffirming his administration's track record, highlighting achievements in security, infrastructure, and social welfare. He stated that the government has always been guided by consultation, legality, and impact.

However, he argued that recent developments in the national polity demanded a "decisive and strategic" response. Describing the move as a matter of "political exigency," the Governor revealed that after extensive consultations, the decision was made to align Adamawa State with the APC to leverage the "Renewed Hope Agenda" of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

"It was not driven by personal ambition nor by convenience," Fintiri stated. "It was guided by one overriding consideration: the long-term stability, development and prosperity of Adamawa State."

Quoting the late Senate President, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, the Governor described the decision as an exercise in "political sagacity" and "political geometry." He argued that the alignment is a "reciprocally beneficial decision" that would bring Adamawa into the "mainstream politics" of the nation, ending what he termed the state's years of "sideline politics."

In a significant assertion of his political control within the state, Governor Fintiri declared that he is not moving alone. He announced that he is entering the APC with the entirety of his political machinery.

"We are moving into the APC with all the 226 wards, 21 Local Government areas, all elected and appointed members and indeed our energy and our political machinery to confer benefit to our state, the nation and our people," he declared, calling on all his supporters to register massively with the APC.

This claim, if accurate, would represent a complete dismantling of the PDP's structure in a state it has governed for nearly a decade, effectively handing Adamawa’s political apparatus to the ruling party at the center.

Addressing concerns that the defection might be seen as a betrayal of the mandate given to him on the PDP platform, Governor Fintiri sought to reassure citizens that the change of party would not change his commitment to them.

He framed the defection as a collective journey, stating, "Wherever we go from here, we are going as a collective." He insisted that the core of his administration's work would continue unabated, promising to continue building infrastructure, empowering youth and women, and creating employment.

"This is more than a promise. It is a sacred covenant," Fintiri said. "It is a bold walk into a guaranteed future for Adamawa state. You have always trusted us and it has always worked well for you. This time around more than ever before, we solicit for that trust."

Governor Fintiri’s defection marks one of the most high-profile political realignments in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. It significantly bolsters the APC's presence in the North-East and deals a substantial psychological and structural blow to the PDP, which now loses a sitting governor in the region.

The governor's emphasis on joining the "mainstream" and leveraging federal government initiatives will likely be interpreted as a move to secure greater federal resources and political relevance for Adamawa. The coming days will reveal the reaction of the national PDP leadership and whether Governor Fintiri's claim of a unified, cross-party movement of his structure will hold without internal dissent.
