National Ordinance Day: NOA DG Calls for Greater Respect for National Symbols

 Abuja Nigeria – September 16, 2025

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has charged citizens across the nation to honour and show greater commitment to Nigeria's national symbols as the country marks National Ordinance Day 2025.

Speaking at an event in Abuja on Tuesday, Issa-Onilu emphasized that symbols such as the National Flag, Coat of Arms, National Anthem, National Pledge, and the Constitution are more than mere emblems; they are the embodiment of Nigeria's sovereignty, unity, and collective identity.

“Respect for our national symbols is respect for Nigeria itself,” the DG stated. “Each time we hoist the flag correctly, recite the pledge sincerely, or sing the anthem with pride, we affirm our loyalty and commitment to the ideals of our nation.”

He clarified that National Ordinance Day, observed annually on September 16, commemorates the historic handover of these national symbols at the time of Nigeria's independence. Issa-Onilu urged citizens to use the day as a catalyst for reflection and a renewal of their dedication to the nation's core values.

The NOA boss further called on institutions, including schools, government bodies, communities, and private organizations, to proactively integrate respect for these symbols into their daily routines and culture. He stated that such conscious efforts are vital for deepening a sense of national identity and strengthening social cohesion among Nigerians.

The event featured presentations on the proper use and significance of the national symbols, attended by representatives from various youth groups and educational institutions.

The National Orientation Agency is the leading agency for public awareness, advocacy, and social mobilization in Nigeria. It is tasked with informing and educating Nigerians on government policies, programmes, and activities while promoting patriotism, national unity, and constructive citizenship.
