Hon. Dr. Stephen Maduwa @ 58: The Tapestry of Grace

Yola, Adamawa State- September 12, 2025

The scent of incense and flowers lingered in the church, a sweet, holy aroma that seemed to hold the echoes of the hymns just sung. He stood for a moment in the quieting hall, his heart a drum of quiet, profound gratitude. Yesterday was not just a birthday; it was a landmark, a cairn built on the mountain of his life to say, “Look what the Lord has done.”

At fifty-eight, many men count their achievements, their acquisitions, the lines on a resume. He counted mercies. Each year was not a tick on a calendar but a stitch in a grand tapestry woven with the unfailing grace of God.

The threads were not all silver and gold; some were dark and frayed, representing trials overcome, fears silenced, and protections unseen. Yet through them all ran a brilliant, unbreakable thread of divine faithfulness—a constant testimony that had sustained him, and more importantly, his family.

His mind drifted back through the years, a montage of moments where God’s hand was so evident it felt tangible. The close calls, the unexpected provisions, the quiet peace in the midst of storms.

Hon. Dr. Stephen Maduwa is a philanthropist not because he had excess, but because he had witnessed a source that never ran dry. He is a democrat, a believer in the people, because he sees the divine image in every person he met. And if he was a beacon of hope to thousands, it was only because he was perpetually turned toward the ultimate Source of light, reflecting what was so freely given to him.

The hum of respectful voices brought him back to the present. He looked across the room, and his heart swelled anew. There, amidst the congregation, was the Honourable Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, engaged in warm conversation. Around him were the members of the Adamawa and Taraba State Houses of Assembly, commissioners from both states—men and women of stature and duty. They had come.

They had set aside their weighty responsibilities to honour him. This was not a political gathering; it was a fellowship of respect, a testament to shared hopes for their people. Their presence was a gift he deeply cherished.

But his eyes soon searched for and found his true anchor. His beloved wife, her smile containing a universe of shared memories, unwavering support, and quiet strength. His children, who had taught him more about love than any book ever could.

They were his first ministry, his constant prayer, his most cherished legacy. They had stood by him, not just in the glow of celebration, but in the shadows of doubt and the grind of daily life. Their love was the most practical expression of God’s grace he knew.

And then there were the others—the family, the close associates who felt like family, the friends whose laughter was medicine, the well-wishers whose prayers formed an invisible shield around him. This tapestry of his life was held together by their threads of love, prayers, and steadfast support.

He took a deep breath, the weight of fifty-eight years feeling not like a burden, but like a crown of kindness bestowed upon him. The celebration was over, but the gratitude was eternal. It was a fuel that would drive him forward, to continue serving, to continue hoping, to continue being a living testament to one, simple, undeniable truth: Indeed, God is faithful.
