ENE OBI @63: Celebrating a Torchbearer for Justice - By Mazi Uchenna Nwafor

“Ene Obi is a path for better Nigeria”

In the corridors of advocacy, where voices often fade against the noise of power; with inducement and government incentives, some of such voices ends in silence. But Comrade Ene Obi stood like an unwavering flame—bold, courageous, brilliant, and fiercely compassionate.

As the former Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, Ene carved out a legacy not just in policy and programs, but press for equity and equality in the hearts of a nation still yearning for dignity, fairness, and hope; working with local women leaders to challenge power dynamics, advocated for increased women participation in governance and ending violence against women and girls – she is a member of the Nigeria Election Situation Room.

It is indeed fact, that some persons who have attained her position on global stage, will rather take the back seat and enjoy the dividend of their labour, but Ene Obi will rather give her all and continue to push for the betterment of her people.

To speak of the person of Ene Obi is to speak of courage clothed in humility. Her life’s goal is in rebellion against systemic injustice—championing the rights of girls, women and youth, amplifying the voices of the underserved, and boldly confronting the structures that perpetuate evil, and inequality upon the people they are elected to govern.

In Nigeria, a nation struggling with broken systems, Ene is building bridges, lending a voice to the vulnerable and voiceless in society. She fought for credible elections not as a political ideal but as a human right. Her voice became a trusted drumbeat for transparency and civic responsibility, her presence in any dialogue on good governance was both a moral compass and a call to action to all stakeholders.

Through advocacy, sensitization, protest, dialogue in public fora, she lends out her voice. She understood that development without inclusion is mere lip service. Under her leadership at ActionAid Nigeria, countless communities experienced firsthand the transformative power of grassroots mobilization, especially women and girls who, through her, discovered not just opportunity—but their own inner strength.

Ene’s advocacy for equitable livelihood was not a passion born from theory, but from deep empathy and concern for human life and dignity. She walked with the displaced, stood beside the poor, and spoke truth to power even when it was inconvenient and suicidal. Her work was always intentional, pressing towards the mark, no for her own gain, but for the good of Nigeria and its people.

Today, August 27th, Nigeria celebrates a titan of social justice. Ene Obi’s struggle and philosophy, lives in every daring girl, woman and youth who will not seat on the fence and watch things go out of hand, but will stand under the sun and rain to echo their voices against the oppressors; seat at the dialogue table to drive home their demand for better Nigeria.

Her life style and push for better Nigeria, is a lamp that brightens the foreseen future of that youth who casts a ballot with confidence, believing Nigeria will work again, in every rural farmer who dreams bigger because someone once believed they could. Ene Obi has given hope to countless beneficiaries. She has mentored multitudes without even taking a count, as she may never knew she did – her lifestyle is all it takes to reshape those who admire her courage and her purpose.

As the world celebrate another round of 365 days of this Advocate of Justice and Equity. We pray for more healthy years of service to the people and country. Your lifestyle is emulated by millions around the world; your struggles are inherited by younger generations coming.

For the love you have for Nigeria and its people; you name will be written with gold in the sands of history and posterity will remember you for good. You name shall be mentioned in reference and for good in every conversation that foster public good, even long after you are gone.

Mrs. ENE OBI, words are too scarce to narrate your personality to the world, but those who knows you and those who read will attest that you are a Woman of Great Quality. I celebrate you Today.

Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns.
