Adamawa State Approves 150 Hectares for IOM Urban Shelter Project in Malkoi
Yola, Adamawa - August 22, 2025
The Adamawa State government has approved the request by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for 150 hectares of land at Malkoi to be used for the development of durable solution shelters. This was disclosed when a delegation led by IOM’s Global Deputy Director General for Operations, Ogochi Daniel, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor in her office.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by his Deputy, Professor Kaletapwa George Farauta, warmly welcomed the delegation and appreciated the visit, describing it as timely and significant. He emphasized that it reflects the strong and consistent partnership that Adamawa State has enjoyed with IOM over the years.
According to the Governor, Adamawa State has greatly benefited from IOM’s presence and interventions, particularly in areas such as camp management for internally displaced persons, reintegration of returnees and migrants, livelihood support, and community stabilization.
He noted the significant role IOM has played through its embedded database system within the Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and Humanitarian Services.
Governor Fintiri also commended IOM’s contributions during recent flooding incidents, especially in strengthening the state’s border management capacity. “These efforts have touched countless lives, restored dignity, and contributed to peace and stability in our state,” he remarked.
and He reaffirmed that his administration has adopted the Recovery and Peacebuilding Program as a guiding framework. "Our priorities are clear: addressing challenges through durable solutions for displaced persons and returnees, building community resilience, expanding access to basic services, and empowering our youth through livelihood and skills development. These priorities align very well with IOM’s mandate," he added.
The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to the partnership with IOM, assuring the delegation of his personal support in advancing their joint programs. He noted that the Ministries of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation as well as, Lands and Survey are finalizing the allocation process for the approved 150 hectares in Malkoi.
Earlier, Ogochi Daniel, the Global Deputy Director General for Operations at IOM, outlined the organization’s objectives and commended Adamawa State for being the first among four Nigerian states to develop and endorse a State Action Plan (SAP) on Durable Solutions. She said this marked a pivotal shift from humanitarian aid to long-term recovery and resilience.
She highlighted the deep collaboration between IOM and the Adamawa State Government in promoting durable solutions to displacement, and lauded the state’s financial commitment to supporting the SAP. Daniel recommended integrating SAP priorities into the Adamawa State Development Plan and the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to ensure continuity, accountability, and long-term impact.
Daniel also expressed strong support for activating the Durable Solutions Steering Committee, chaired by the Governor, to ensure effective multi-sectoral coordination and resource alignment. She emphasized IOM’s investment in institutional capacity by co-developing a Solutions Data Management Curriculum with UNDP and UNHCR and supporting the Adamawa Durable Solutions Technical Working Group.
She encouraged the state government to actively participate in the National Durable Solutions Steering Committee and other federal platforms to boost visibility and access to national and external funding.
