Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP, Cites Deviation from Founding Principles

Abuja, Nigeria- July 16, 2025

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a misalignment with the party's original values.

In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of his Ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku expressed his disappointment with the party’s current direction.

The letter read in part: "I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities the party has afforded me, including serving two terms as Vice President and being a presidential candidate twice—experiences that have profoundly shaped my life."

He added, "However, I can no longer remain a member as the party’s present course significantly departs from the principles upon which it was founded. This decision, though painful, is necessary due to irreconcilable differences."

Atiku, a founding member of the PDP, emphasized the difficulty of his choice, stating, "As one of the party’s pioneers, it is heartbreaking to take this step. Nevertheless, I wish the PDP and its leadership success in the future."

The former vice president is currently a prominent figure in the opposition coalition. His departure marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
