Wike, Fubara Resolve Political Feud After Tinubu-Brokered Peace Meeting
Abuja, Nigeria- June 27, 2025
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, confirmed on Thursday night that the prolonged political rift between him and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been resolved following a mediation by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Wike stated that both parties had reached a final agreement to end hostilities and collaborate for unity.
“We have agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor has also agreed to work with all of us. We belong to the same political family,” Wike said.
He acknowledged that the dispute had persisted for months but described the latest resolution as decisive.
“Like all human disagreements, there comes a time for reconciliation. Today, we have finally settled our differences and reported the outcome to Mr. President. As far as I’m concerned, the matter is closed,” he added.
Urging supporters to embrace peace, Wike said, “I call on all loyalists to work harmoniously with everyone involved. There’s no more conflict—nothing further to debate.”
Meanwhile, Governor Fubara welcomed the truce, calling it a divinely orchestrated resolution and a pivotal moment for Rivers State.
“Today is a day to thank God. This is a significant milestone,” Fubara remarked.
He stressed the importance of peace for the state’s progress, saying, “Rivers State needs stability, and by God’s grace, with the intervention of Mr. President and the consensus of our leaders, peace has been restored.”
Fubara also vowed to uphold the newly brokered unity, stating, “We will do everything possible to ensure this peace is sustained.”
The discord between Wike and Fubara, his political protégé, began shortly after Fubara assumed office in May 2023. Tensions escalated in October when Wike-aligned lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Fubara retaliated by demolishing the State Assembly complex after a mysterious fire, forcing legislative activities to relocate. The ensuing power struggle plunged the state into a governance crisis.
In December 2023, Tinubu mediated a temporary truce, with Fubara conceding key appointments to Wike’s allies. However, the agreement collapsed, reigniting the conflict.
The situation worsened until March 18, 2025, when Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing severe insecurity and administrative breakdown. The president suspended Fubara’s executive powers and appointed a sole administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, to oversee affairs.
