Nigeria Commends APRA for Elevating PR Standards, Urges Authentic African Storytelling

June 11, 2025

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Idris Mohammed, has praised the African Public Relations Association (APRA) for advancing PR excellence across Africa and championing authentic narratives about the continent.

Represented by Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Minister spoke at APRA’s 50th Anniversary Conference in Mombasa, Kenya. The event, themed “Transforming Africa through Safe and Responsible Digital Communication: Celebrating 50 Years of APRA,” has gathered PR experts, policymakers, and media stakeholders from across Africa.

Minister Mohammed commended APRA’s five-decade legacy of elevating PR standards and creating platforms for dignified, accurate storytelling. “APRA has been instrumental in raising the bar for PR practice in Africa, ensuring our narratives reflect our realities, aspirations, and achievements,” he stated.

Emphasizing the need to shape Africa’s global image, the Minister called for a unified commitment to sharing “a story of hope, progress, unity, and passion.” He urged PR and media professionals to leverage digital communication responsibly to counter stereotypes and highlight the continent’s progress.

Africa’s story must be told by Africans, for Africans, and to the world. We must take ownership of our narratives, celebrating our diversity while promoting a shared vision of prosperity,” Mallam Onilu reiterated.

The conference (June 8–13, 2025) features panel discussions, workshops, and keynote sessions on digital transformation, ethical communication, and socio-economic growth. It marks a milestone in APRA’s role as Africa’s foremost PR body driving professional collaboration.

Stakeholders are expected to adopt resolutions strengthening Africa’s communication ecosystem, ensuring the continent’s voice remains influential in the global digital landscape.
