Senate' backs Sen. Abbas' Call for Military Base in Adamawa

Abuja, Nigeria- May 22, 2025

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to establish a military base in Hong Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State to counter the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the North-East.

The resolution was passed during Wednesday’s plenary following a motion moved by Aminu Abbas, Senator representing Adamawa Central, and co-sponsored by all lawmakers from the North-East. Abbas praised security personnel for their efforts but stressed that a military base would enhance security presence and improve counterinsurgency operations.

He expressed concern over the frequent attacks in Hong LGA, which have displaced residents and destroyed critical infrastructure. According to him, the insurgency has disrupted economic activities across Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe States.

“The terrorist activities have severely impacted the local economy, affecting farming and trade in the region,” Abbas stated.

However, Seriake Dickson, Senator representing Bayelsa West, argued that the Senate was overstepping its constitutional authority by instructing the President on military deployments.

“This motion encroaches on the powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief. We cannot dictate where military installations should be located,” Dickson said. He proposed amending the resolution to urge the Federal Government to take “appropriate actions” without specifying measures.

His stance was challenged by Wasiu Eshilokun Sanni (Lagos Central), who referenced constitutional provisions granting the National Assembly the power to make such recommendations.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for heightened security vigilance in the region, noting the porous borders that allow insurgents to re-enter Nigeria.

The Senate also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to affected communities.
