Former NHIS Executive Secretary, Professor Usman Yufus, Regains Freedom After Meeting Bail Conditions
Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), who was arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over a month ago, has regained his freedom after meeting the conditions for his bail.
The Professor of Haematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplant and public servant was arrested on January 29, 2025, in a dramatic manner at his residence in front of his family. He was bundled out of his home unjustly and was subsequently taken to Kuje Prison, where he remained in custody for weeks without trail.
Professor Usman’s arrest was linked to corruption allegations during his tenure at the NHIS NHIS.
Throughout raging storm, Professor Yufus maintained his innocence, expressing unwavering faith in the Nigerian judicial system to gaurantee his right to fair hearing. However, with many failed attempts to secure his bail, one begins to wonder if there are invincible forces pulling the strings on his matter.
From court of public opinion, Professor Usman who is an ardent critics of bad governance, was arrested over an alleged crime to make him look guilty with view to silenced him. Arguably and in many instances, Professor Usman prolonged detention as in many other cases sparked conversations questioning the existence of and mandate of the anti-graft agency whether its a tool for suppression or and institutional watchdog for financial accountability in governance.
As the drama continues to unfold, Professor Usman’s legal team believes truth will prevail over I justices "We are confident that the truth will prevail, and Professor Yufus will be exonerated of all charges," said his lead counsel, Barrister Amina Okoye.
Nigerians are product of history, in this country, they have seen high profile cases against public officers and politicians swept under the carpet despite having convincing evidences valid enough to secure conviction.
As the clock ticks, time will tell whether Professor Usman’s case is one of a witch hunt orchestrated by certain powers that be or not is a genuine concern for justice.
